I went to base a few miniatures with GW’s Stirland Mud the other day. About half of it remained and I realized there was no back up bottle. A bottle of this material costs $7.80 in USD. Mind you, this is only 0.8 of a fluid ounce. I decided it was time for an alternative.
However, what alternatives existed? Quite a few actually. Numerous companies produce basing paints or pastes. The next question: which one fits my ideals? Not as easy of an answer.
While Vallejo produces great product, their material is not always available to order. Local gaming stores seem to be reducing their variety of paint companies as well. Most seem to be going the GW route – which I’m avoiding.
I happened across Huge Miniatures while looking at models on Etsy. Despite their name, they do not sell models, only basing materials. Among the items – basing pastes. Awesome!
On top of it, they are reasonably priced for the size. The closable bottle is 2 fluid ounces for $8 USD, so I could get three times the amount of basing paste for 20 cents more than the Games Workshop paint. So with that in mind I purchased 2 bottles from the company and a flocking mixture for basing.
A big jump in faith as I knew next to nothing about the company and the quality of the wares. I patiently waited for my order, which came a day earlier than predicted. Excited, I opened the package and went about using the pastes, as well as the Woodland 4 n 1 scatter flock.
I have to say that I’m very happy with the purchase. The quality of the material is great and even better it’s produced by a family here in the USA. As with any new product there exists a learning curve but honestly it’s fairly quick. The paste dries in roughly an hour and to a rock-like consistency.
